Mirrors and art are one of my favorite ways to enhance our home. I love adding color through art and mirrors can really anchor a piece of furniture and reflect light into your space.
One thing I’ve learned via years of reading design blogs is that there are right and wrong ways to hang art and mirrors (and even TVs!) and that most people make the same mistake – hanging them too high. When we had our Samsung Frame TV installed in November, I got questions about “how low” it was mounted. I think a lot of people are used to seeing TVs mounted up high above fireplaces, but we don’t like to put our TVs up high because we want to comfortably see the screen at eye level from our couch. We don’t stand to watch TV, so we factor in the length the couch is away from the TV and the size of the screen itself to determine the best height.
The same goes for our art and mirrors – I prefer to hang them lower/at eye level so that they’re not floating high on a wall – it can look out-of-place. Here are some images of art and mirrors from our current home and our previous home.

We see artwork hung at the wrong height more than we see anything else! In general, we see people hanging their art or mirrors way too high. Here are some tips that we share with all of our clients.
CONSIDER THE SPACE/SCALE: As a general rule of thumb, always consider the scale of your space when hanging art. We usually prefer to use larger artwork and frames rather than smaller in our projects. It’s easier to fill in spaces when you have less space to fill!
EYE LEVEL: We always hang our artwork right at eye level or a tad below or 60 inches from center to the floor. However, if you are hanging a piece of art or a mirror above a piece of furniture, you should hang it only 4-6 inches above the furniture. If you are going to hang something above a sofa or console, the piece should be approximately 2/3 width of the furniture. You don’t want a tiny piece of art above a sofa!
HOW TALL IS TOO TALL?: The art or mirror is too tall for the space if when hung, it’s taller than the door frame. We see this all the time! Pay attention to the scale of the room and the scale of the piece you’re putting on your wall.
GALLERY WALLS/MULTIPLE PIECES: When hanging multiple pieces of art or frames, we usually hang large and medium pieces 2-3 inches apart, and smaller pieces only 1.5-2.5 inches apart. You do not want your pieces separated from each other. You want the pieces to look cohesive, not disconnected.
THE RIGHT MAT: When hanging prints or photos behind a frame, we prefer the frame to have a wide matt/border. This trick helps make the print or photo pop and I think overall, it’s a cleaner look!
We hope you find these tips helpful. Go take a quick look around your home and see if your frames or artwork are hung too high! This is an easy fix!
